Botox is known worldwide as the beauty secret for many of our favorite celebrities. But what is Botox® and how can it help you achieve a rejuvenated appearance? We dive deep to answer your most common questions like whether the treatment hurts, how long it lasts, the ideal age to get Botox®, and what steps you should take post-treatment. Read on to have your questions answered.
How does Botox® work?
Botox® works by reducing the activity of wrinkle-causing muscles in the face. Botox® stops the muscle's nerve signals which means dynamic wrinkles created by muscle activity, fade or disappear completely even when your face is relaxed.
Do Botox® injections hurt?
One of the most typical questions about Botox® is whether the injections are painful. While pain is subjective, Botox® injections use a very thin needle, which has been described as only mildly annoying or minimally painful. Furthermore, the process is quick and if truly needed, you may request the nurse to place a topical numbing agent to reduce the feeling of pain or discomfort.
Some clients can become quite resistant to the feeling of the needle to the point where they forego the need for a topical numbing agent. This makes the appointment move along faster as the numbing agent can take twenty minutes to work its magic.
How long does Botox® last?
Botox® injections last an average of three to six months. As we cannot stop the aging process, there will be follow-up sessions needed. The time interval between treatments is often longer after having injections a second and third time.
What can I expect after my appointment?
Botox® aftercare is straightforward. It is important not to massage or rub your face 24 hours after the injection. You will also want to avoid lying down for a minimum of 4 hours afterward to prevent product diffusion. Furthermore, avoid any strenuous physical activity that will make you sweat for at least 24 hours.
What's the ideal age to start using Botox®?
While it is perfectly legal to use Botox® starting at the age of 18, you will not need it at such a young age and youthful stage of your life. Botox® is recommended, at minimum, for those in their late 20s who want to prevent wrinkles and reduce fine lines.
While in your 30s, Botox® is used to prevent your existing wrinkles from becoming more pronounced. As you hit your 40s and make your way into your 50s, Botox® injections can be used to offset any profound, apparent wrinkles and crow's feet. In your 60s, Botox® injections can help you regain a fresher appearance.
There is no ideal age to start using Botox®. It all depends on your goals and what kind of appearance you wish to achieve with the treatment.
